Don't Bother Trying No Diet.com
In one of my earlier posts I discussed a drink from NoDiet.com that was supposed to help you loose weight. FYI, don't bother buying it I know 2 people that are doing it and not really loosing any weight. Don't waste the money. I would say go with the good old fashion way and eat properly and exercise. Also to expand on diet gimmicks I know a young girl who had a stroke after doing the HCG drops because it was to hard on her system. Yeah I think I'll hit the gym tomorrow!
The End!
It's been a whirl wind of new information the past 2 &1/2 months. Yet I have learned so much. Biology hasn't always been my favorite subject, after taking this class I have learned to enjoy it. I will leave this quarter remembering words like, protien, chromosomes, mitosis, daughter cell, metaphase and the list goes on and on. When I eat I think of cellular reperation and what's happening in my body. When I look at my kids I think of alles and traits. It's funny how your mind shifts once you understand these concepts. I will take the things I have learned and apply them in my everyday life now with new meaning. Thanks Sarah!

Bad Landlords!
I watched this TV show about a family that moved into this apartment complex that was infested with Raccoons. When they first moved in they could hear noise in the attic at night, it sounded like someone was up there sweeping. They called the Landlord of the complex to come and investigate and got no response. After 3 phone calls the husband decided to take matters into his own hands and go up to the attic and see what was going on. He found tons of Raccoons living up there having babies. They found a whole in the roof where the animals were coming in. Someone finally came out and trapped the Raccoons and removed them from the attic but as fast as they would remove them they would return. The renters ceiling caved in and the wife ingested feces from the raccoons and got ill with a life threatening lung disease. I don't understand why the landlord of the complex didn't try to help sooner. I know that there needs to be a place for animals to live as well as humans as we are all apart of the ecosystem. But, this is a case of lack of responsibility on the human side of things that almost cost someone their life. It make me freak out and want to go organize my garage!

Fasting!
In health books I have read they have discussed the power of fasting from food for 24 hours. How it gives the body a chance to take a break from the hard work of digesting food. That it cleanses and helps rejuvenate the organs. I have also read books about fasting for spiritual reasons. That after a certain amount of time going with out food and water our bodies start to produce "Ketone Bodies" which signals to the brain you are no longer hungry and no longer need food. Once this happens you have physiologically put off the natural man and become a spiritual being. Today I fasted for both health reasons and spiritual. I have done this before but for some reason today was extra ordinary. I felt as if my spirit wasn't connected to my body and I really did feel like I was connected to God or what others call a higher being. Health wise I also felt as though I was cleansed and that my body was getting a break from digesting food.I would do it again but not more than once a month as I don't know if my body could handle it more than that.

Diets, Diets, Diets!!!!
Im reading this book called the 4 hour body. It talks about reshaping your body in 28 days by eating a high vegtable and protien diet 6 days a week. The 7th day you have a good breakfast and then can have whatever you want. In the book the author discusses the fact that the world tends to think if you eat 100 calories of mayo and 100 calories of celery that it doesn't matter they are the same. He states that the body uses the calories differently and that it does matter. He goes on to discuss why you get a cheat day and what it does for the body. First, by changing the food intake shifts the body out of the range it's used to being in and gives it the energy charge it needs to start burning fat again. Second he says it's a life style as we are human and will all eventually cheat so why not plan a designated day for it to aviod the stress of knowing. I want to be healthy and want to eat sugar all the time. I will eat perfectly heathly meals and then have to have a treat. I want to try this way of eating so I know each week I can have a treat and try to cut down on the intake of sugar to 0 the rest of the week.

Diet Pill Comments
While I have written about diet pills a couple of times in my blog, I think it's such a big issue with all of the media pressure woman face today. I think that while maintaining a healthy body is important the press expects perfection or they make fun of woman and belittle them. As a woman I feel the pressure and if I gain a few pounds stress over it so I identify with the criticism and feel for other woman.
Diet Pills
My friend is trying to loose weight, she just ordered this product off the internet called Diet.com. She knows a lady who is very overweight but after using the product has lost 14 pounds the first month, and tons of inches. My friends goal is to loose her weight before summer. The girl described the product as a pure protein and that it curbs your appetite for sweets. She actually said that her doctor recommended the product as a last chance before getting surgery to help with weight lose. My feelings are mixed. I wonder if it messes with the body and metabolism? You know how you hear about people gaining more weight after they diet, is this another one of those gimmicks? The other side of the coin is because my friend is so over weight she is stressing her body and her heart, so maybe this is better. I would love to know more about this product and how it works on the body's system. Exercise and eating healthy are so important and I think working at it daily will help implement good habits.

The Mystery of Colds!
It's funny, during the winter people often complain they have been sick for months. I know that's true for myself, I find that one member of my family gets sick then I'm sick and we continue to pass the cold around for weeks. Why? Is it in our heads? One day I can feel ok and the next like I'm sick all over again. Now my mom say's that using Vitamin C, 1,000 mgrams every hour will kill the cold and make you healthy, my neighbor says that Emergnecy, a powder mixture you put into water or juice will do the trick. What really is the best product and why are there so many to choose from? My biggest question is the fact that I do find my family passing the cold back and forth. How does that work? Why does that happen? I can't get the same exzact cold I got the first time the second time around, it must be a different strain? Colds are those thorns in your side you can't fully get rid of. It's like your functioning but your not, you don't feel bad enough to lay in bed all day but not good enough to go out and get the things done you need to. Every year I say tomyself I'm not going to get sick, and each year I do. So next year maybe I should try the vitamin C theory before I get sick and see if that increases my immune system and protects me during the hard winter months.

Folic Acid & Pregnancy
For the past 4 years I have been trying to get pregnant. I have been on fertility drugs and nothing has worked. When I would take my fertility drugs, Clomed, I would get sick at the thought of taking them, it's as though my body was rejecting the drug yet I couldn't verbalize it. After gaining 15 pounds and feeling sick I stopped taking the drugs and decided to go back to trying naturally. It took my body 9 months to finally release the hormones from my body and begin to drop the weight. In addition I got regular yeast infections because of it and felt horrible. It's so funny how different things work for some and not for others. My sister in law has also had problems getting pregnant and was on the same fertility drug. Each time she got pregnant in the 2nd or 3rd month. Ive heard that when you stop worrying about it you get pregnant, Ive tried that too but somewhere in my subconscious it's always there. I read an article on folic acid, that it's supposed to help women who are trying to get pregnant. I see a nature path Dr. and she has me on all kinds of herbs and vitamins that are good for my body in general, but nothing specific for pregnancy. I have 3 boys so I shouldn't complain, I had hoped for a girl and have felt like my family isn't complete. I guess I never thought I would be one of the ones who couldn't get pregnant and didn't know why. I wish the Dr. knew why and could pin point the issue, instead it's a big question mark. I wish there was a machine that could zap you and tell the why's and how's of this health mystery in my life. For now I continue to read and search for other ideas, ways to increase my chances while my biological clock ticks and ticks...

A Leafy Green Diet!
I read an article about the importance of fiber in our diet and how it lowers our risk of disease. I knew green veggies are good for you but didn't make the connection that we got fiber by eating tons of green, leafy vegetables. Our society is overcome with disease and illness. What we eat plays a role in how we feel and look and the article went on to say that it also plays a role in reducing mens strokes. The problem is green vegetables aren't always the best flavored side dishes and kids aren't always excited about eating KALE for dinner. Maybe introducing these foods at an early age instead of sweets will make a difference? They also talked about how important fruit is in our diet. Fruit also contains carbohydrates and gives the body the right kind of fuel. Other countries such as India were mentioned and it was pointed out that this country eat primarily fruits and vegetables, and they are healthier then ours. Is America just a fast food capital and slowing dyeing because of what we eat? All I think we can do is make individual changes and research health so that we know more about healthy food choices.

Science & ESP!
I read an article about a science journal that has been around monthly for 45 years. Recently they published an article about a study that was done on ESP. Evidently many professionals in the industry are upset that this study was published. The journal defends itself by stating the study went through the normal process of submission just like any other study would. It was submitted to 3-4 peers and feedback was given, they felt as though the study met the guidelines required to be published. Its a little confusing as I was under the impression that you were only allowed to submit scientific topics. Is ESP testable, apparently from this study of 1,000 student's it is! The topic sounds like the X files or Alien but fascinating. A comment was made by a women in the scientific community who said it might have been published to attract readers and get noticed? Maybe a media trick, a ploy to increase readership and stir up questions in that field. I was enjoying the lack of drama in science but this shed some new light on the fact that everywhere in every field there is going to be different opinions.

The Benefits of Organic Milk!
As a consumer I am very aware of healthy food. But for the longest time I have questioned the benefits of milk. In my home we only use milk for cereal and cooking, we almost never sit down with a glass and just drink it. The article I read regarding organic milk discussed the benefits of drinking organic was in fact better for us and stated facts as to why.It stated that you can cut saturated fats 30-50% by drinking organic milk. The article goes on to discuss that by drinking organic milk we able to get our vitamins and the right amount of fatty acids our body needs. Further more that the cows we get milk from are not treated with pesticides and hormones. The writer then goes on to discuss the benefits of raw milk. The writer states it is not a debate as to whether or not raw milk is better than organic, but that in addition to raw milk, organic is good too. I'm not only interested in the benefits of the milk but the treatment of the animals. It seems that the animals are fed healthier and have more room to roam the land. Where as the cows that are injected with hormones and stuffed into smaller quarters are not as healthy. I wish the only milk on the shelf at the grocery store was organic and across the board all dairy farmers were required to raise organic cows. I have heard non organic milk causes children to hit puberty sooner because of all the hormones. Early puberty in youth is not the only thing Ive heard happening, but health other health issues. I think by eating healthier it would cut down on medical costs and we would be a much healthier society. Of course milk is just a piece of this and so much more would need to take place, but we have to start somewhere.

No Diet.com, Is it True?
There is a new product out that is a weight loss liquid in a bottle. The company claims that your body burns fat during the first 45 mins you go to sleep. They say the body needs protein to burn fat. The idea behind the product is that you take a tablespoon each night before you go to bed and that you will loose weight while you sleep. A question comes up, why not just eat a steak before you go to bed? The company responds by stating that the body doesn't need the calories just the protein and that the tablespoon is just the right amount for your body. I have a friend who said her high school friend lost 4 pant sizes taking the product and that it has no side affects. Can this really be true? Does the product really work or is this just another scam? I want to try it and see for myself.

First Entry
Lately Ive been watching the T.V series Bones. I have fallen in love with the main character known as Temperance Brennen aka BONES. She is an anthropoligist and studies bones. I love the way she thinks and am facinated with the topics presented in each episode. Ive found "Bones" to be interesting and want to learn to think as she does. Logically, scientifically. Sitting in class today I found myslef facinated taking a break from the typical daily routines I am used to, fashion, publishing overall creativity. I liked learning about the Themes presented today and found some ties between things I am already working on. For example, in the fashion world everyone is concerned about ageing. If one of the questions asked in Biology is the question of ageing and how to stop it or slow it down then I am in the right place. This setting is so different from what I am doing day to day yet fits and I am enjoying learning how to incorperate the concepts in class into my day to day life. It's like opening another world and I like that it's factual instead of emotional and creative.
